Woodworking Bench Tail Vise

Like any clamping devise, a tail vise has two main components, a fixed jaw and an adjustable jaw. both jaws accept bench dogs (see sources), so that in addition to clamping between the jaws, a tail vise can also clamp above them. this dual capability is the key to a tail vise’s versatility. the fixed jaw is a laminated beam that’s glued and. My workbench doesn’t have a traditional tail vise. i have a twin-screw vise on the end instead. it stretches across the full end of my bench and doesn’t notch into the benchtop. but i use it the same way as i would a tail vise — to clamp long workpieces or large panels to the benchtop or to secure pieces like rails and stiles vertically.. The area around the vise will always remain as flat as the rest of the bench, since the "moving block" section of the traditional tail vise is eliminated. the benchcrafted tail vise is also much easier to install than traditional tail vises, since it eliminates the task of building the complex wood superstructure around the vise hardware..
